How to find the cheapest diapers per count
Diaper prices only make sense per diaper. Compare exact box counts with current prices, then check the subscription total and size-up risk.
Diaper math is deliberately hostile. The same diaper comes in a 27-count "jumbo" pack, an 88-count box, and a 148-count monthly box, at three different stores, with a subscription discount on one of them. The sticker price tells you nothing. Price per diaper is the only number that survives.
Build a current per-count ranking

Two patterns are worth testing every time:
- The big box often wins. Cost per diaper can drop as count rises, but promotions and seller changes create exceptions. Divide the current total by the printed count before committing.
- The emergency trip can erase a shelf win. A diaper-only drive adds the whole trip cost — about $8–$16 — $0.66 in gas (5 mi round trip at 26 mpg, $3.42/gal) and $7.50–$15.00 in time (30–60 minutes at $15/hr) — to whatever the shelf charges. The per-diaper math on an emergency pack is the worst number in this category.
The size-up trap
One genuine caveat on bulk: kids change sizes. A 148-count box of size 4 is great value until week two of it, when the kid is suddenly a size 5.
Our rule: go big on the current size only after a month of stability, and size up in the small pack first. The savings from bulk are real but they're single-digit dollars; a half-used box is a bigger loss.
Never drive for diapers
